See the cast / crew lists below

Above is the list of operas Marciem put on for Opera Theater at the Conservatory starting with "la Boheme" in 2007. I shot video for all of these and prepared disks for each cast/crew for their resumes and archives. Those cast disks surprised me. I had assumed, based on my years of shooting dance performances, that the video would just go back to the company or school and get buried in archives, never to be seen again and not to be shown without permissions. I wasn't used to selling what I shot or even seeing it used anywhere after the performance except for reconstructions or grant applications.

Much to my surprise Marciem asked me to sell disks to the cast and crew. I had no means to sell the material and it took several days to write the code for orders, in various combinations, to go through PayPal. As a result almost all of the works were made available for cast and crew. The exception was the Peter Brook "Carmen." The Peter Brook company wouldn't allow that.

In any case, what I am getting to is the reason I happen to have this list of operas ready and a complete set of cast lists (below).

This table was adapted from my page with links to the cast/crew videos. They have some other pictures of the operas along with cast lists for each opera. However those are sales pages for the cast video so I didn't want to put direct links to each one on this page. Instead I've collected the cast lists for all the operas and put them on this page.

Marciem Bazell

Memorial service is shown below

From conservatory email Thursday morning 23 Jan 2014:

"Our sweet friend Marciem Bazell ended her battle with ovarian cancer this week. She fought hard, enduring the ravages of surgery and chemotherapy, knowing that her cancer was terminal. Marciem leaves us with memories of her laughter, her love of drama, music, and dance and her fierce dedication to her students. Our hearts are heavy with grief today as we mourn this loss. Arrangements for a memorial service for next week to honor her life will be announced in the very near future.

"Members of Marciem’s Team"

Cheryl Lynne Adam

Marciem died January 22, 2014

And a response from me:

"Fierce indeed. Fierce and brilliant. Our loss. How much she cared for her students and in turn how much they cared for her is part of her distinction. She brought her own atmosphere and we all breathed in. And not truly gone. Marciem is implanted in everyone she touched, a little here, a lot there, some more over there and there. She gave herself to everyone.

Even though I shot thousands of exposures over the years with Marciem, of her operas, I shot very little of her. She made a big point of protesting and objecting but I snuck in a few, just the same. I wish I had snuck in far more. There must be tons more cell-phone pictures with cast and family members and Marciem. I combed over my material looking for shots with Marciem in them. Here are many of those few pictures.

Marciem was one of those rare people who truly owned the space she was in. Not in a dominant or harsh way but just by being there and being in charge. And she was, definitely, in charge. Make no mistake. My connection with Marciem over the years has been glancing, tangential, tiny, as photographer and videographer so I haven't been there nearly as much as any student. Yet, in all that time (2007-2013) I've never heard anyone accuse her of being harsh. That alone says a lot. Direct, honest, ferocious, caring. No pretense. Didn't suffer fools gladly. She always had your back, for real, and you knew it.

For me, coming from dance photography, I was immediately struck by both her willingness to bring dance into her operas and her knowlege of dance (not always the same). Both parents were dancers and had dance studios. Her sister Myra Bazell (http://www.myradance.org/) is a dancer (and social worker) in Philadelphia. Myra Bazell teaches post-modern and performs across the US and internationally.

In one way or another everyone came to Marciem and yet she never micro-managed, although she could, and would handle tiny detail decisions as needed. Not shy about that. She wanted it just right. Marciem was an artist. She also wanted to make sure her students had the experience of making those decisions so she put a lot in their hands. She was truly a teacher, a performance teacher. Dispensing approval to create and to make decisions was part of her way.

In the best way (and forgive the pun, but it snuck in before I recognized it) she is parted out among her students. Everywhere they are, in any part they play, there is some of Marciem and something encouraged by Marciem. I would watch former students, cast and crew menbers, return year after year, to the back of the house to pay affection and respect to Marciem at each performance.

They always made a point of re-connecting with Marciem. On reflection, "reconnect" may be a misnomer, maybe acknowleging the connection which never really leaves would be more accurate. Each time you could see the love in their eyes and the good feeling they got from basking in that connection, even when it was just a few words in passing to say hello. They didn't even need to say, "Hi, remember me?" It seemed, there was no one she didn't remember.

Night in a Museum, The 2cnd Floor, April 2013 - The white shirt upstage on the chair was worn by Aaron Markarian in Merry Widow. It was there through the show. This opera was dedicated to his memory. Aaron was murdered late Thursday evening March 21 after his last performance Sunday afternoon in A Midsummer Night's Dream in a senseless home invasion.

Thanks to Hali Feldman (Ph.D. Associate Professor and Coordinator of Music Theory) for spotting my error in giving the wrong day, I was remembering when I first heard. Quote from my linked Midsummer page "... Then came the news of a home invasion involving conservatory students in which four persons were shot, one fatally. One of the cast members posted pictures on Facebook of the victim who was killed, 23-year-old Aaron Markarian - from one of the cast-photo disks I gave to cast members for themselves. He was murdered late Thursday night March 21st."

It was Marciem who got the material gathered and arranged for the funeral parlor, the television media and others. She called me early the next morning to get video ready for the television news. I was in the middle of editing video that morning with Bill Whitener who was getting a reel ready in preparation for retiring from KCB as artistic director. I looked at the caller ID and saw it was Marciem. I immediately took the call. Bill made room for Marciem's urgent mission.

Marciem could barely speak as she told me what had happened to Aaron Thursday night. When Marciem calls, you go. You just do.We only had a couple of hours on the deadline. First it was for channel 4. We waited on my driveway for the reporter to come by in her SUV and pick it up. Then I prepared more video and stills for other stations and some to go on UMKC sites - both stills and a web-size video edit.

Marciem was the one who put it together. A couple of prominent others were quoted in media as if they really knew Aaron, and did not, as far as I could tell, mention Marciem. It was Marciem, who cared so deeply and who put it together for the media, all of it. I know because I prepared that material at Marciem's request, USB's with video and still files and a file providing ID's for the material. I and delivered some of it. She delivered the rest or made contact with media people who picked up some of it. Without Marciem there would have been a police report and news about a home invasion, but no sense of who was lost or how much promise was lost. Aaron Markarian would have been nothing but a name in a short, quick news item. That filled-out appreciation was due to Marciem.

The Memorial

Tuesday, January 28th at 5 p.m. - Central United Methodist Church - 5144 Oak St., Kansas City, MO - Reception after

Because I had arrived just a tad before the start of services at 5 pm I had a worry, would I even find a place to park?
The parking lot looked full as were the streets around. I was lucky, I found one, single spot. As I rushed into the building
a lady at the rectory pointed knowlingly at the Church entrance. She new where I was headed, where everyone else was.
Marciem's friends, lots and lots of friends. Marciem's sister Myra Bazell and spouse Madison Cario had flown in from
Philadelphia. An oboeist was playing (Marciem was also an oboe player). Latter a mezzo soprano would sing (Marciem
was a mezzo).

This quote from Myra Bazell
(last page of the program)
‘1 am really thinking of how difficult it is for people to understand their impact on the world. This outpour of love and intense respect is magnificently overwhelming. I only hope that Marciem felt and knew how she affected people. Did she? Did she feel in her marrow that she rippled out into this world as music does, vibrating both dissonant and harmonic.. .deeply shifting the way things work and how people feel about themselves and subsequently affect others... So I want to tell people to reach out and express their appreciation for the people they love, respect, cherish, were once touched by... an old teacher, ar old lover, a distant friend, or someone you recognize as making a difference. Small differences that eventually burgeon into flowering trees.”
- Myra
May the schwartz be with you!
